1. Visit a Museum (or Two, or Three!)

Get to know this unique, history-rich region with a stop by one of its many museums. You’ll certainly have a lot to choose from. There’s the Delaware Art Museum, with its collection of British Pre-Raphaelite art. The Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library is the former du Pont family home, featuring an estate filled with American decorative arts and 60 acres of gardens. The Amstel Museum is likewise a step back in time, built in 1738, and one of New Castle, Delaware’s, few surviving early colonial structures. But for those travelers who don’t care for the history or art, there’s the American Helicopter Museum, a sure favorite with both kids and adults alike.

2. Get Outdoors

Despite Wilmington acting as the region’s urban hub, the Brandywine Valley and surrounding areas are filled with plenteous ways to get outdoors — no city hubbub required. Whether you like to hike, cycle, paddle or wildlife watch, there’s something for you. Try Alapocas Run State Park for hiking, rock climbing and even some art; the on-site Blue Bell Barn is home to the Delaware Folk Art Collection. Ashland Nature Center, meanwhile, is your place to go for nature programming for all ages, set inside the center’s butterfly house, hummingbird garden, bird blind and other unique venues. Bellevue State Park offers tours of the on-site historic mansion, fishing by the pond and live music events during the summer months.

3. Taste the Local Flavors

The Wilmington area and Brandywine Valley have received recent acclaim as a foodie hotspot in the Mid-Atlantic. So, when you’re hungry during your visit, where should you go? A few of the local favorites include Washington Street Ale House, serving microbrews and gastropub-inspired fare; Bellefonte Cafe, more of a hidden gem of a restaurant, with live music always on tap; and Kid Shelleen’s, a long-time staple for casual, outdoor dining. You can also find loads more to enjoy on the Delaware Culinary Trail, with its 24 restaurants and eateries spread across three counties. Thirsty? Then you can’t miss the Delaware Beer, Wine & Spirits Trail, which starts in Wilmington.
