The Rosa Restaurant
The Rosa Restaurant, located at 70 State Street in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is a family-style Italian eatery with a rich history dating back to its opening on December 22, 1927. Founded by Ralph Rosa, who transformed his family home into a restaurant after being laid off from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, The Rosa has become a cherished establishment in the community. Notably, it weathered the Great Depression, closing only briefly, and holds the distinction of serving Portsmouth's first legal glass of beer after Prohibition's repeal in 1933. Set directly beside the picturesque Prescott Park and in front of the colonial atmosphere of Strawberry Banke, The Rosa offers a warm and inviting atmosphere. The menu features classic Italian dishes, including fresh homemade pasta, veal parmigiana, shrimp piccata, and chicken Marsala. The restaurant also offers vegetarian-friendly options and is known for its house-made herb gnocchi with slow-braised espresso pork shoulder and lasagna Bolognese. After a recent renovation, The Rosa now boasts a newly fashioned open-concept interior, blending modern updates with its historic charm. The building, established in 1856, has been structurally remodeled from the inside out, while still maintaining the feel and ambiance of what began in 1927. The menu continues to honor its traditions, featuring familiar dishes alongside new additions like fresh, homemade pasta and house wine on tap.
