No Caribbean getaway is complete without ample time spent in the sun and sand, but if you’re not the type to spend more than a day or two lounging about and soaking up some rays, then you may find yourself wondering what exactly there is to do in Cozumel otherwise. Luckily, this popular Mexican island destination isn’t just all resorts and beach clubs.
Here are a few suggestions for ways to fill your Cozumel itinerary.

1. Visit Punta Sur Ecological Park.
This natural state reserve is your place to go for getting up close and personal with Cozumel’s beautiful landscape beyond all of the tourist-geared development. Many endemic species call the park home. Keep your eyes peeled for crocodiles, as you climb your way to the top of the observatory tower. Visit the park’s museum lighthouse for even more views.
2. Go diving (or at least snorkeling).
Cozumel is known as one of the world’s best spots for scuba diving. Book a diving tour and get out there beneath the big blue waters to see what all the fuss is about. One of the top spots to dive is at Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park, which encompasses the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, aka the second-largest coral reef in the world.
If you’re not comfortable with diving, at least try a little snorkeling, which can still be a rewarding experience, especially if you, again, book a tour or guide to show you where to go.

3. Check out the Mayan archaeological sites.
The San Gervasio archaeological site is likely the most important such historic site on the island. Long ago, the site was a place of worship and pilgrimage for Mayans dedicated to the goddess Ixchel. Because it was a popular worship site, it was also a spot for commerce and other parts of day-to-day life.

4. See what’s growing at the Cozumel Pearl Farm.
A pearl farm? In Cozumel? You bet! This unique attraction welcomes tours, during which you can learn all about the pearl cultivation process. The farm is the only operational pearl farm in the Caribbean. Your tour includes a boat ride, lunch, afternoon on the beach and more, for a six-hour immersive experience that you won’t soon forget.

5. Play the day away at Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park.
If you like the idea of swimming or snorkeling off the Cozumel coast, but you’d prefer a more controlled environment than the general open ocean, or you’d like to combine a day in the water with some family-friendly fun, you might want to consider spending an afternoon or longer at Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park. The water and amusement park features a lagoon for safe swimming, diving and snorkeling alongside the resident dolphins, while the greater park offers shopping, dining, bars and more.
