Look out over Port Royal Sound and breathe in the history of Port Royal Island and the town of Port Royal, a rich story of shrimp boats, family tradition, and the tides of changing industries.

Port Royal was one of the first British settlements in South Carolina. The Broad, Coosawhatchie, Colleton, Chechessee, and Pocotaligo Rivers flow into Port Royal Sound, and the Intracoastal Waterway passes through it.

The Port of Port Royal and the 11th Street Docks held a vast and varied background that encompassed everything from railroads to military battles, and oystering to the legendary shrimping industry and even on the big screen! The hurricane scene from the film “Forrest Gump” was filmed near the once-busy docks. The shrimping fleet was made up of a small group of men and women dedicated to their craft, who were willing to handle the challenges of this way of life. Sadly, the docks have been removed, the shrimp boats have left, and the future of both is unknown.

Here at Fishcamp on 11th Street, we keep the traditions alive by offering local seafood and great service. So please, sit back, relax, and enjoy the incredible Lowcountry way of life.
